Gastric Bypass Surgery for Weight Loss
In gastric bypass surgery, the stomach is divided, creating a small pouch.
The remaining portion of the stomach is not removed, but “bypassed” and plays a diminished role in the digestive process. A Y-shaped portion of the small intestine is then attached to the pouch. The volume of food or liquid the pouch is capable of holding is approximately one ounce. Weight loss occurs due to a reduction of calories, changes in hormones affecting hunger and decreased nutrient absorption.
Gastric bypass is considered the “gold standard” for weight loss surgery due to its very long track record.
Proven benefits include:
- Significant weight loss
- Curing or improving many obesity related medical conditions, including, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea
- Reducing risk of death and improving quality of life.
Our weight loss surgeons specialize in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery approaches to gastric bypass operations. With minimally invasive surgeries, recovery is typically shorter, with decreased pain, and you are less likely to develop certain complications, such as a hernia.
